Did you know that approximately 90% of the elements from your old mobile can be reused?
Just 5 minutes of your time can make a difference in the world.

What the problem is?

For every production of a smartphone a small amount of coltan, a mix of minerals columbita and tantalita is being used. It is rare in nature and has become crucial for technological advancement due to its applications, and in the case of mobile phones it helps maintain the battery charge longer.
Coltan trade and mining is totally militarized and has caused a serious sociopolitical imbalance in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a country with 80% of the world's coltan reserves. In addition, militias in Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda smuggle the material, with logistical and weapon support, often from foreign governments such as the US, Holland, and Belgium…
The miners, many of them children, collect clay (which is rich in Coltan) in subhuman conditions. Tantalum fever has also pushed thousands of miners into national parks east of the country causing serious damage to the ecosystems and endangered species like chimpanzees and mountain gorillas.

In addition to the responsibility of companies, there is that of consumers, and one alternative is the recycling of mobile phones. In this way, the components are recovered and it is not so necessary to extract more natural resources.

Why is it so important to recycle our mobiles?

  • In order to reuse terminals and reduce the unsustainable demand of its natural components.
  • In order to recycle all useful elements and to be able to correctly and safely dispose of all toxic components, avoiding unnecessary contamination of the environment.
  • In order to reduce the excessive demand of Coltan and in continuation, reduce armed conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
  • To help raise funds for projects like MONA (for every recycled mobile sent in our name, MONA receives a small donation from EurekaMobile).

What will happen to the mobile once you send it to the recycling station?

If your mobile is still functioning and can be repaired it will be send to other countries where they can still be of use. Those terminals that are beyond reparation will be passed on to specialized recycle stations which dismantle them in order to reuse as many elements as possible and correctly dispose of all other elements making sure to minimize any negative effects on the environment.
